October 2026: The most important deadlines for carriers
October traditionally becomes one of the busiest months for trucking companies. Several critical deadlines converge during this period, and missing any of them can result in fines, unscheduled inspections, or even being placed out of service at the roadside.
We’ve gathered all the key dates in one place so you can prepare calmly and not miss anything important.
1. October 1 - UCR 2027 Registration Opens
The registration window runs through December 31, 2026.
FMCSA has proposed an average fee increase of roughly 20% starting with the 2027 registration year. Before paying anyone, always confirm the final published amount on the official UCR portal - do not rely on intermediaries who may quote outdated or inflated figures.
Who must register:
- Motor carriers
- Brokers
- Freight forwarders
- Leasing companies
- Even one-truck owner-operators
Tip: Don’t leave registration until the last days of December. Many companies face technical issues and long queues at the end of the year.
2. October 6 - Revoked ELD deadline
In August, FMCSA revoked the registration of several devices. If you are still operating one of them, you must switch to a registered ELD by October 6.
After this date, using a revoked device is treated the same as having no ELD at all. The consequence is an immediate Out-of-Service order during any roadside inspection.

3. October 31 - Q3 IFTA return due
This return covers the period from July through September.
In 2026, October 31 falls on a Saturday. Most jurisdictions move the deadline to the next business day (usually November 2). Confirm the exact due date with your base state to avoid late-filing penalties.
What to do right now
- Check the status of your UCR registration and prepare the required information in advance.
- Make sure all your ELDs are registered and fully compliant with FMCSA rules.
- Gather your Q3 IFTA data and confirm the filing deadline in your base state.
- Set calendar reminders for all three dates.
